Following the comprehensive remodelling works in the Puerta del Sol last year, a shade solution has now been agreed upon.
Following weeks of "complex analysis and calculations" to tackle this problem, a solution has been found: the installation of awnings that are "safe for pedestrians, can withstand gusts of wind, and respectful of the heritage", since the buildings that make up the centre are considered Assets of Cultural Interest (BIC), according to a report by ABC.
The Local Historical Heritage Commission, after checking in situ a sample of the anchors and the fabric that will be used, has already given its approval, although the project still has to be put out to tender.
"So that Madrid residents and tourists can continue to see the square and its facades, the fabric had to be very specific. We have had to follow some guidelines that have made this process somewhat more complex," said Madrid City Council.
