The figure of 1,806 fatalities represents an increase of 3% compared to 2022, although in the case of serious injuries the increase is 9%, in a context of a greater number of large-scale displacements, 2% compared to data from the previous year. In comparison with other European countries, these data place Spain in the ninth country with the lowest rate of deaths per million inhabitants, with 38 deaths per million inhabitants. However, the DGT continues to incorporate precautionary measures on roads in order to reduce road accidents as much as possible.
The red line over the white line, which is still common on some Spanish roads is painted on roads in Spain that have recorded the highest accident rates. The objective of the red line is to make it more visible to drivers and to let them know that they are even entering an area of high risk of accidents, and must reduce speed.
The Andalucía Development Council was one of the first to apply this new method, implemented on the A-355 road, towards Marbella, on a 4km stretch. Thanks to this project, serious traffic accidents have been reduced by 30%, which is why the Junta has assured that it will continue to implement similar measures.
