"Where there used to be a tree, now there is concrete," denounced the Más Madrid spokesperson at City Hall, Rita Maestre, in statements to Público. The opposition leader denounced that the Almeida Government had cut down up to 80,000 trees in the city. To these tens of thousands, there are 28 trees in Plaza Santa Ana, as confirmed by the Sol y Barrio de las Letras Neighborhood Association.
The affected specimens include three cypresses. The measure takes place within the framework of the reform of the underground parking located in this area and which, in addition, will be privatized. With this new pruning, 51% of the specimens that currently shade the square will be cleared.
Of the 54 trees located in the square, 19 will be transplanted and only seven of the specimens will be protected and will remain in place after the works. In this way, as the Regional Federation of Neighborhood Associations of Madrid (FRAVM) already reported in January, 85% of the trees will be affected.
