De la Torre, who sent the letter on August 7, wants with this initiative to mitigate the effect that tourist apartments have in cities like Malaga, where the proliferation of these homes has reduced the amount of properties available on the long-term rental market.
The mayor believes that this tax would bring several million euros to the municipal coffers that Malaga would allocate to subsidize the rents of families in a situation of social exclusion.
"If tourist housing has increased the price of rent, which is obvious, it should be done in such a way that people see that the tourist pays an amount that serves that purpose," said De la Torre in an interview with EFE. "It would be a few million euros, a significant figure, which would allow us to have much more power and attend to many more families within that social policy that we have been carrying out for years," added the councillor.
