The loyalty of dogs, known as "man's best friend", has been the inspiration for many artists. One example is that of Hachiko, who waited for years for his owner. The feature film inspired by him won the hearts of the public after the last of its adaptations to the big screen, in 2009.
During the 90s, a similar situation also occurred in Spain. This is the case of Canelo, a dog who waited for his owner for twelve years at the entrance to the Puerta del Mar hospital, in Cadiz. The municipality itself wanted to recognise the animal's bravery and has had a street named after him since 2004, located near the medical centre.
The association AGADEN (Cadiz Association for the Defence and Study of Nature) eventually took charge of the animal and provided him with the necessary vaccines and permits to remain at the doors of the medical centre. Sadly, Canelo died in 2002, after being hit by a car, while his owner died in the hospital.
Now the street has been named after the dog and he also has a statue that represents him as a tribute to his loyalty from the people of Cádiz.
Like the Japanese dog, Canelo will also have his own short film. The project, directed by Jordi Ayguasenosa, has been produced by Animagic Studios and its release date has been set for next August 26.
