This ministry, headed by Ernest Urtasun, already announced last May that it would abolish this award that had been given since 2011 if the public consultation that it was going to carry out endorsed it.
In order to carry out the elimination of the National Bullfighting Award, the Ministry of Culture, whose head is Esnert Urtasun, has opened a public consultation in which, according to figures from ElDiario.es, the position of those consulted is very clear, since more than 90% supported the withdrawal of this award. Sources from the Ministry of Culture have hinted that they have taken into account the evolution of Spanish society in abolishing this award.
This process has been carried out in two phases. In the first, which took place in May and prior to the publication of the draft of the order, 3,268 communications were received from individuals or legal entities. Of these, 3,151 were in support (96.42% of the total); 89 were in rejection (2.72% of the total); and 28 were considered impossible or very difficult to interpret (0.86% of the total). In the second, between the end of June and mid-July, the process was carried out at the Ministry of Culture's electronic headquarters, where 215 communications from individuals or legal entities were received. Of these, 197 were in support (91.63% of the total); 12 were in rejection (5.58% of the total); and 6 were deemed impossible or very difficult to interpret (2.79% of the total).
The order, which will come into force this Saturday (one day after its publication in the BOE), explains that "various circumstances advise" the modification of the norm that regulates the National Awards of the Ministry of Culture, such as the need to adapt these awards "to the evolution of the creative and cultural sector" in attention to "current social demands."
"Current social and cultural reality shows that certain activities linked to bullfighting or specific elements of them are rejected by large sectors of society because they are considered an unacceptable form of violence against animals," explains the text published in the official journal.
