“Today [9 July], we are announcing Sol, a new transatlantic submarine cable system to connect the US, Bermuda, the Azores and Spain,” the tech company said on its blog, noting that “the name chosen is a reference to the cable system's mooring points in warmer climates”.
Sol “completes a unique investment in transatlantic resilience together with the Nuvem submarine cable — with the two systems interconnecting terrestrially in the Azores, Bermuda, the United States and the Iberian Peninsula,” it added.
The Sol cable will be manufactured in the US and, when operational, “will increase the capacity and reliability of our growing network of 42 Google Cloud regions around the world, helping to meet growing customer demand for Google Cloud and AI services in the US, Europe and elsewhere.”
According to the company, Palm Coast in Florida will receive the Sol cable in the US.
“We will partner with DC BLOX to land the cable and establish a new connectivity hub in Florida, commonly known as the Sunshine State,” and “we will also develop a terrestrial route connecting Palm Coast to our Cloud region in South Carolina,” he adds.
When the project is complete, “Sol will be the only fibre optic cable in service between Florida and Europe.”
In Spain, “we will partner with Telxius to provide the necessary infrastructure to land the Sol cable in Santander, further integrating the Google Cloud region in Madrid into our global network,” Google said.
For her part, Gema Igual, mayor of Santander, stresses that the local authority is committed to facilitating this type of infrastructure because its implementation attracts investment, talent and technology companies and generates jobs.
Telxius CEO Mario Martín and Bermuda's Minister of the Interior Alexa Lightbourne also welcome Google's investment.
