This ban is the culmination of years of negotiations between City Hall and traders, who fear that there will be a decrease in revenue, as customers will avoid outdoor terraces during the winter, Reuters reported.
The measure was first introduced in 2018, but the city allowed the devices to be phased out gradually, to give the hospitality sector time to adapt.
Even so, electric heaters with a power not exceeding 150W/m2 will continue to be authorized at least between November 1st and April 30th, according to a statement from the City Council, dated December 17th.
It should be noted that heaters for outdoor areas are already banned in France, a country where energy conservation groups estimate that their use on a 75 m2 terrace during the winter months emits as much CO2 as a car that travels three times around the world.
