The count includes the attendance of people in six different spaces linked to the event (Race Village; Moll d'Espanya and Rambla del Mirador; fan zone in the Plaza del Mar; fan zone in Bogatell; Recer dock in the Olympic Port; and the boats), although the City Council does not break down the data. The visits do not differentiate between people. The same fan can visit several spaces several times during the competition and each of them will be counted individually through the system used.

The figures also do not include people who go to the teams' or the organisation's private spaces. Municipal sources say that the register only includes the days of competition and that only visits during opening hours in the Race Village or the fan zones are counted.

The organisation estimated at the start of the competition that the America's Cup would attract up to 2.5 million visitors to Barcelona. The figure was based on previous experiences, such as the 2007 edition in Valencia. That edition, according to a report by the Valencian Institute of Economic Research, welcomed 2.48 million visitors, although 12 teams participated, double the number of the current edition.
