This is one of the main measures in terms of housing announced by the 'popular' leader for her second year at the head of the Valencia City Council. She intends to increase municipal control over illegal tourist apartments and will proceed to cut off basic supplies.
In addition, Catalá has announced that she will also ask the Government of the Generalitat, headed by Carlos Mazón, for the appropriate powers to be able to carry out periodic inspections and sanction these illegal properties, with fines that can exceed 100,000 euros and reach 600,000 in very serious cases.
The mayor has asserted that "tourism is a fundamental sector for the economy" of Valencia. "It contributes 15 percent to the GDP. Therefore, it must be looked after. But we are also clear that this city cannot die of its success. We need to regulate tourism and commit to quality tourism that respects and cares for our city, that puts the neighbour first and at the centre of all decisions," she explained.
She has also announced that the capital of the Turia will prioritise cruise ships that spend the night in the city and will prohibit the arrival of more than one tourist ship per day.
