The commitment to increase the size of the Armed Forces is included in the Capability Goal that NATO has assigned to Spain for the period 2025-2035, which was endorsed at the recent Atlantic Alliance summit held in The Hague, according to data released by the newspaper El País and confirmed by government sources to the Efe news agency.

Plans to increase military strength were already included in the security and defence plan presented in April by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

The prime minister had announced, without specifying the amount, that this increase was included in the total planned investment of 10.471 billion euros.

The first of the five pillars of this plan, which represents 35% of total expenditure (approximately €3.6 billion), is aimed at improving the working conditions of troops and sailors, increasing the number of Armed Forces personnel, updating equipment and improving military training systems.
