Mbappé totalled 62 points, as goals in the top European leagues are worth double, compared to 58.5 for Sporting's Viktor Gyökeres, who scored 39 goals in the I Liga, which is only multiplied by 1.5 points.
In his first season with Real Madrid, after seven with Paris Saint-Germain, 26-year-old Mbappé won the trophy for the first time, succeeding England's Harry Kane, who scored 36 goals for Bayern Munich in the 2023/24 Bundesliga.
Egyptian Mohamed Salah, who rounded off the podium, was also in the running, but only scored one goal in Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on the final day of the Premier League season, which he still finished as top scorer with 29 goals (58 points).
The trophy has also been won on four occasions by Cristiano Ronaldo, who won it in 2007/08 with Manchester United and in 2010/11, 2013/14 and 2014/15, and who inevitably loses out to Argentina's Lionel Messi, who has six trophies to his name.
