The representatives of the transport sector, in Madrid, attended a meeting with the Secretary of State for Transport. After the period of demonstrations, José Antonio Santano and the sector’s professionals reached an agreement where the Government promised to hire 30.000 professionals in the coming years. The measure is even more necessary due to the regulation that allows early retirement for drivers in 2025.

For that purpose, it was launched a campaign called Plan Reconduce, that aims to recruit drivers for lorries and buses. The growing of e-commerce and the seeking for public transport services demands for the hiring of more professionals.

The Government will also launch a digital campaign to get closer to people that may probably trying to change professional activity, specifically women and younger people. The ministry’s website is carrying out the campaign through social media, for example.

It is required for bus drivers to have a minimum age of 21, driving licences for categories B and D, a certificate of professional competence (CAP) and having passed specific and practical knowledge exams on closed and open circuits. It will also be asked to attend 280 or 140 hours of training depending on the chosen modality.

When it comes to driving a lorry, the minimum age for access is 18 and a category C driving licence is required. Applicants must also pass theoretical and practical tests, hold a certificate of professional competence (CAP) and undergo an initial training period, which is subsequently supplemented by 35-hour courses every five years. For those who choose to transport dangerous goods, in addition to the above requirements, it is necessary to obtain ADR authorisation and undergo basic training as a driver for the transport of this type of cargo.
