"María Branyas has left us," her family wrote this morning on her social network X account, adding that "she died as she wanted: while she was sleeping, peacefully and without pain."

Born on March 4, 1907 in San Francisco, California, Branyas had memories that went back to the First World War and the Spanish Civil War, as she explained in 2019 in an interview with 'Catalan News'.

The family returned to Catalonia when she was 7 years old in 1914, at the height of the first great war of the 20th century. "We arrived by boat. Because of the war, Germany was attacking the north and you couldn't cross the Nordic seas, we had to go through the Azores and Cuba," she said. For more than 20 years, Branyas had lived in the Tura residence in Olot.
