The Las Palmas port authority said in a statement, quoted by the Efe news agency, that these buoys, which function as floating desalination plants, will now be manufactured in the port for commercialisation.
Ocean Oasis, a group that develops solutions related to sustainable desalination, has installed this first wave-powered buoy in the port of La Luz, which produces fresh water and then supplies it to the coast.
The pilot buoy “Gaia”, named after “mother earth” in Greek mythology, proved to be an “effective and viable” solution within the concept of blue infrastructure, emphasised Ocean Oasis officials Sebastián Feimblatt and Thomas Johannessen at the project presentation.
The president of the port authority, Beatriz Calzada, highlighted that Ocean Oasis' proposal offers a “strategic solution” for producing drinking water without the need for connection to the electricity grid and thanked all the companies in the port community, as well as the port authority staff, for their involvement in the development of this project.
