The measure may be approved today during the meeting where the government’s executive council will discuss it. The agreement may be settled between the government of the Generalitat and the Comuns parliamentary group. If the measure is approved the tourist tax may double the value of overnight stays.

Recently, associations of hotels, campsites and tourist flats mobilised to stop the measure. Nevertheless, the government of Salvador Illa, as a minority force, depended on other political forces, like the Comuns, to disapprove the measure.

The increase of the tax was confirmed on 27 February, when the government and Comuns expressed their agreement on this measure. According to a spokesperson for the Comuns, quoted by Hosteltur, stated that the tax “is not paid by hoteliers, but by tourists.” Adding that, in a time where Catalonia is setting “record numbers of tourists and revenue”, it only makes sense for the government to increase the tourist tax.
