By reviewing the Alava plain with historical and modern aerial photographs, LiDAR cartography and images obtained through drone flights in search of unknown dolmens or potentially interesting burial mounds from an archaeological point of view, specialists from the Arkikus company have discovered a Roman circus in the Iruña Veleia site, just 10 kilometres from Vitoria. According to a report by ABC, the elongated venue, is 280 metres long and 72 metres wide - the size of three football fields - could accommodate around 5,000 spectators.
The discovery "reveals that Iruña Veleia, a provincial Roman city, passing through Alava territory had a greater regional importance than previously thought," according to archaeologist Javier Ordoño, founder of Arkikus.
