The hotel chain has bought a former hostel on the island of Menorca and plans to acquire others. Ibiza, Mallorca and the Canary Islands are some of the places where the company wants to invest, which are also some of the most profitable locations for Mélia.
The decision to accommodate the workers was made at a time when there are fears that the housing crisis in Spain could cause a labour shortage in the country's tourism sector.
The CEO of the group realised that “paying employees well” was no longer enough to “retain talent”, as quoted by El País. Therefore, the company wants to guarantee accommodation for its staff, which is unable to afford accommodation in extremely touristy areas, where demand ends up inflating prices.
