This contract, awarded to a consortium of Spanish companies, provided for the acquisition of 12 units of the High Mobility Rocket Launcher System (SILAM), developed based on the Puls system from the Israeli group Elbit Systems, according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).
The cancellation of this contract, reported by the local press and the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, was formalized on the official Spanish platform that lists public contracts, in a document dated September 9.
According to the newspaper "La Vanguardia", the Spanish government is currently engaged in a broad review process to eliminate Israeli weapons and technology from its armed forces. Sánchez has been one of the most vocal European critics of his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as of the Israeli offensive in Gaza in response to Hamas's attack on Israeli territory on October 7, 2023.
Relations between the two countries have been extremely tense for several months, and Israel has not had an ambassador to Spain since Pedro Sánchez's government recognized the State of Palestine in 2024.
Last week, Madrid recalled its ambassador to Israel, following heated discussions between the two countries following the announcement of new measures against Israeli officials announced by the Spanish government.
In April, the Spanish Interior Ministry had already decided to terminate an ammunition purchase contract from an Israeli company, partly under pressure from the far-left Somar party, the Socialists' government partner.
The Delas Centre, a Barcelona-based research institute specializing in security and defence, estimates that Madrid has awarded 46 contracts to Israeli companies since the start of the Gaza war, according to data collected from the public procurement platform.
