According to the EU Statistics Office, 59,085 people from countries outside the political and economic bloc applied for asylum in February 2025, down from the 77,170 who applied for international protection status in the same month in 2024 and 12 per cent less than in January this year (66,800).
Eurostat reports that in February this year 7,630 people re-applied for international asylum in European Union countries after their first application was rejected - down 6 per cent compared to January 2025, but up in February last year (7,175).
The majority of asylum seekers in February 2025 were Venezuelans (8,345), Afghans (5,610) and Syrians (4,630).
Spain (12,805), Germany (11,185) and France (10,725) received 77 per cent of all asylum applications.
Of the total 59,085 applications for international protection, 1,720 were from unaccompanied minors, mostly from Syria (300), Afghanistan (210) and Egypt (200).
Germany received most of these applications (575), Spain 330 and Greece 245.
