“The retail sector is undergoing a profound transformation,” which is forcing us to “adapt to new shopping habits, which mean that consumers prefer smaller, more convenient establishments,” explained the retailer, which operates in Spain under the name Alcampo, in a press release.

For this reason, Alcampo has decided to reorganise its activities in Spain through a plan that responds “to new consumer trends”, which “will involve the closure of 25 supermarkets in difficulty” and “will affect 710 employees out of a total of 23,300”, it adds.

According to the retailer, originally from the north of France, the sites in question are part of a “batch of 224 supermarkets” acquired in 2023, which included supermarkets that “did not correspond to its model” or whose “location was not ideal”.

This “transformation is essential to recover results and guarantee sustainable growth in each of the shops”, insists the French group, which nevertheless reaffirms “its desire to continue growing and creating value” in the Spanish market.

The Commissions of Workers (CCOO) union, which was informed of the redundancy plan, said in a statement that it intends to “address this difficult situation, which is new for the company, bearing in mind that the main objective is to maintain employment”.

“If the workers have to leave the company, they should do so under the best possible conditions,” the union insisted.
