Extremadura is one of the least visited regions in Spain, which has one of the smallest populations in the country, the lowest GDP per capita and the highest unemployment rate.
It was in this context that the regional government of Extremadura decided to create an initiative to attract new residents, namely digital nomads. Around 200 vacancies will be created for digital nomads, who can receive subsidies of up to 15 thousand euros if they live in this Spanish region for two years. To carry out this initiative, political leaders in the region will allocate a total of €2 million.
Who can apply?
Anyone who wants to move to Extremadura will have to work remotely and commit to living in the Spanish region for at least two years. The initiative is aimed at alternatively qualified professionals in the technology sector, writes Euronews.
These scholarships are aimed at people living in other regions of Spain, as well as foreign citizens who are living in another country, as long as they have not lived in Extremadura in the six months prior to applying. It is important to know that, beforehand, candidates must apply for a digital nomad visa in Spain and obtain a residence document in the country.
Furthermore, the city in Extremadura chosen to live must have an interior population of 5,000 inhabitants.
Young people under 30 who move to Extremadura can receive a grant of €10,000. Anyone over 30 years old will receive €8,000.
Anyone who is under 30 years old and continues to live in Extremadura after two years will also receive another support of €5,000. And digital nomads over 30 who stay in the Spanish region will receive an additional €4,000, says the same publication.
How can digital nomads apply?
The opening date for registration has not yet been confirmed. But it is estimated that there will be news in mid-September, after the program is published in the Official Bulletin of Extremadura.
It is already known that applications must be submitted at the General Electronic Access Point of Extremadura and must be accompanied by proof of current place of residence and a certificate of authorisation to work in the Spanish region issued by the employer.
Selected candidates must be informed within three months. And registration will remain open until 200 places are filled.
